FRMF to hold emergency meeting after VAR scandal

Following last night’s scandalous CAF Champions League final, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation are set to hold an emergency meeting Saturday, discussing possible actions.

The 2018/19 CAF Champions League trophy was eventually lifted by Espérance de Tunis, but the final will forever be remembered for the regretful scenes taking place after finding out that VAR was out of order.

It was after 60 minutes of play that Walid El Karti headed in Wydad’s equalizer from Ismail El Haddad’s cross, but the linesman wrongfully signaled for offside. But while everyone inside the stadium expected referee Bakary Gassama to consult the video assistant referees, nothing happened. Instead, Wydad refused to continue until VAR was utilized. CAF President Ahmad Ahmad and other executive members took to the pitch and discussed heavily, but it became clear that the VAR was out of order and had been throughout the entire game.

After more than an hour of intense waiting, Gassama called the game off and handed Espérance the 1-0 victory, with Wydad still refusing to come out of the locker room for medal ceremony.

The FRMF are expected to hold an emergency meeting on Saturday at 3pm local time, where they will discuss possible actions towards CAF for not having VAR in order – especially considering the controversial decisions involving the video assistant system in the first leg. They are apparently willing to take the case to CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) if necessary.
