The Moroccan football federation have been invited to the WAFU Nations Cup, set to take place in Senegal after the summer.
Following FIFA’s suspension of Sierra Leone, the Moroccan national team look set to take part in the WAFU Nations Cup for the first time ever, as invited guests. This is a tournament hosted by the Western African Football Union, which brings together sixteen teams for this year’s edition.
The competition will take place in Senegal between September 28th and October 12th, starting with preliminary rounds. Morocco have been drawn against Liberia and could already be in the quarter-finals if they manage to overcome the Lone Stars. According to the Senegalese Press Agency, the winner of the tournament could receive $100,000 in prize-money from sponsor FOX Sports.
No statement has been made yet from the FRMF regarding Morocco’s squad, but the most likely scenario will be a team made up of players from the local league deemed not good enough for the African Nations Championship, as qualifiers for that tournament will commence at the same time as WAFU Nations Cup.
